In the case of chrome-on-silica catalysts, which are widely used in the polymerization of ethylene into polyethylene, it has long been recognized that the function of silica gel is not merely to provide a high surface area support for the metal. In fact, the properties of the silica gel profoundly affect the polymerization process as well as the properties of the growing polymer itself. For example, increased silica surface area leads to increased polymerization activity, while increased silica pore size leads to increased melt index (which is related to polymer molecular weight).
Utilizing our state-of-the-art manufacturing processes, we carefully control surface area, pore volume, particle size, impurity levels, metal content, and surface chemistry to produce a wide range of catalysts suitable for the differing requirements of HDPE used in a variety of applications including films, blow-molded products, wire and cable sheathings, and pipes.
In addition to chrome-on-silica, we also offer modified chromium catalysts containing aluminum or titanium to provide performance enhancements needed for certain end uses, such as reduced induction time and increased activity, melt index, and environmental stress crack resistance.
